Description
Date is best guess given the earlier edition by Thomas Crowell & Co. but appears to be very early 1900’s and likely before 1905 if not before 1900. First we’ve seen of this edition though we’re sure book collector’s and dealers are familiar with it. You tell us if it’s a rare edition or not.
Though the Illustrator is not noted at the front, we believe it to be Sir John Tenniel based on comparisons with other known Alice art (see pictures). There may be other artists included as well as there are many lithograph look plates and more numerous pencil like drawings opposite many of the pages. Additionally, there is a full color illustration of Alice sleeping on her sisters lap by the tree/hole at the very front.
The illustration after page 130 has torn somewhat from spine but has not torn the image portion, just the White border. There is some scattered soiling of a few pages and an occasional light Brown mark(s) on a few pages but most are fine. Book is tight but spine at center will open if covers are pushed from edge and spine (see picture). Overall book is a neatly kept but read copy in very good overall condition.
Book dealers and collectors, we know we’re not using your lingo so please ask any additional questions you might have about this nice edition.
